Children’s Group Programs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an intake appointment for? Is it necessary?

Yes, this appointment is very important as it allows group facilitators to gauge your child’s suitability for the program and make recommendations if another program is more suitable. It gives group facilitators an understanding of why you would like your child to join the program, your child’s current home situation (e.g. custody issues), and any triggers your child may have so they can make the group as enjoyable for your child as possible. It also allows them to outline the group processes and expectations and for you to ask any questions you may have.

Can children do two programs at the same time?

It is typically in your child’s best interest that programs are completed in different terms as this allows for focusing on the practice and development of one set of skills rather than trying to learn and practice too many skills.

Can my child still participate in the program if I already know they will miss some weeks?

Yes, your child may still participate in the program however it is important to note that catch-up sessions are not available, rather the group facilitator will try to catch your child up on the content during the next session (please note this is not always possible).

Missed group sessions?

Catch-up sessions are not available, rather the group facilitator will try to catch your child up on the content during the next session (please note this is not always possible). If you really feel that your child missed an integral concept, it may be possible to cover this concept in an individual appointment, if available, but please note that it is highly likely this would have to occur during school hours. Full session fee would apply.

My child is under a shared custody agreement. Is it OK that parents alternate?

Absolutely! If they make this aware to facilitators, then they can ensure that they provide additional parent handouts so that everyone can receive the information they need.

What do they do in the group?

What they do in the group really depends on each program. Please refer to our groups page for more information. There is also opportunity to find out more about the program during the group intake.

My child is on the upper/lower age of the group, will they be ok?

They are more than welcome to still join the group as we generally do have a range, what we would encourage is to look at the waitlist/confirmed list to see the age ranges of the other children. If your child is significantly different (e.g. 7 years old and the rest of the children are 4), then we may suggest waiting for a different term.

Are there other girls/boys in the group?

This will depend on the group itself. All groups are open to both girls and boys.
